There is a continuous desire from companies to design one device that can do it all; play games and movies, run DVD and blu-ray, surf the internet and stream hi-def videos. Game consoles are trying to do that, and some of them are doing it very well. What about a TV set? The struggle to join Internet and TV has existed for some time, but has failed. It is now yahoo’s turn to try.
The Web TV initiative was originally jointly announced last summer by Yahoo and Intel Corp. Intel's CE 3100 chip will be used only in Internet-enabled TVs and devices offered by Toshiba, and a set-top box from Samsung.
Widgets will be used in order for the TV to surf the net and offer an almost computer-experience. There has been a great deal of effort by designers to try to avoid typing as much as possible. Let’s remember they were designing something for a TV set, not a computer.
Yahoo has stated that the Internet experience is designed in such a way as to not overshadow the TV experience, meaning that a TV will basically remain a box showing your favorite programs on your favorite channels.
The most exciting thing about Yahoo’s initiative is that it will basically be an open source platform, meaning that independent developers will be able to design new widgets for the Internet compatible TV sets.
Yahoo has also stated that they will first let consumers fall in love with the whole Internet-TV experience and only after that they will start using adverts for profit.
