Today, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Yahoo announced that it would collaborate with several manufacturers and other companies in order to connect the web with end-users’ television sets.
More specifically, a Yahoo representative stated that the company collaborated with Sony, Samsung, LG Electronics and Vizio in order to release high definition TVs that will natively support Yahoo’s online services platform.
It is well known that bonding TV sets with the broad range of content from the Internet was the dream of any big manufacturers since the web revolution. Therefore, with Yahoo’s online services brought directly on its users’ HDTV screens, is looks like this dream has finally come true.
The new generation of TVs was announced on Wednesday and are planned to be rolled out in March. The TVs will be able to handle Yahoo Widgets, which are small applications that display information about stocks, news headlines and weather forecasts.
However, with the new generation of widgets, users will also be able to browse videos on YouTube, use Flickr. The widgets are programmed to run in the background of broadcasted TV content.
Some may argue that there already were some attempts to unify the two, as Microsoft offered the Media Center platform, a home entertainment platform that was designed with the TV-PC connection in mind.
However, at the time when Yahoo-enabled TVs are released, it will be the first time when a television set is able to offer users internet content without any extra hardware.
To make the most out of its new service, Yahoo released a development kit for its new TV widgets on Wednesday which will make both enthusiasts’ and developers’ task to create new widgets a breeze.
