It may be recession time for some companies, but not for Nintendo, as the console maker proved in the past month. The most recent NPD report revealed record sales outside the holiday shopping season for Nintendo Wii, which sold over 2 million units.
Not only that, but the DS wasn’t far behind, leaving no other console to ruin the perfect top two for Nintendo. Nintendo DS sold approximately 1.5 million units last month.
But the most important thing to note is that with sales going up 10 percent, analysts expect December to be not only a record breaking month, but also to be enough to meet the $22 billion expectation for 2008.
Furthermore, taking a look at the other two important consoles that make quite a stir each month, Microsoft’ Xbox 360 is undoubtedly the winner, outselling Sony’s PlayStation 3 by almost three to one.
In addition to not making the top 3, PS3 didn’t even make the top 4, with PlayStation Portable selling over 40,000 units more than the PS3. PlayStation 2 came last, with 206,000 units sold.
Xbox’s success was boosted by its price cuts, which were around 30 percent, and next month, the Netflix agreement is expected to attract even more consumers, analysts say.
Considering these results, December is expected to be even better. And if Nintendo worked its magic so well in the past month, I wonder how far they can go in the month that is record-breaking by definition.
