Tomorrow is a big day for Microsoft. Its online gaming
service, Xbox Live, will celebrate five years of existence and Microsoft is
ready to party with games, music, movies and points.
As a gesture of thanks to the gaming community the Redmond company is offering a free Xbox Live Arcade game
for everyone, (Hexic 2 in Korea,
and Carcassonne
in the rest of the world). The free game will be available for downloading
between 12:01 a.m. PST on November 15 and 11:59 p.m. PST on November 16.
In addition to this, every active member who joined the
service in 2002 will receive 500 free Microsoft Points.
The Xbox Live community has surpassed already 8 million members
and is expected to reach 10 million members by June 2008.
In March this year Microsoft announced that Xbox Live
service has reached its 6 million member goal four months sooner than
originally the company had predicted. This means that over 2 million members
have joined the service in just six month.
So far the eight million members of Xbox Live have spent
over 3.2 billion collective hours playing online, unlocking more than 600
achievements and creating a total combined Gamerscore of more than 14 billion.
In total, Xbox Live has hosted 2.5 billion game sessions since launch, with
more than 5.6 million hosted each day thus far in 2007.
During the past years, Microsoft expanded the type of content
available on Xbox Live beyond games.
Last November Microsoft had dived into the profitable
video-on-demand business with movies and TV shows from CBS, Paramount,
Disney, Fox, MTV and Warner.
Earlier this year, Microsoft has signed an agreement with
The Walt Disney Studios to bring feature films Studios to U.S.
members of Xbox Live.
Few days ago Microsoft has signed an agreement with ESPN to
bring full-lengths games and TV shows on Xbox Live Marketplace.
But the company has other surprises for the gamers. On December
4, all Xbox LIVE members will receive a free system update with a host of new
features and enhancements. This update will enable consumers to download and
own full Xbox games, such as Halo, Psychonauts, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
and Fable, among others, directly to their Xbox 360. This new service will
launch with an array of blockbuster titles spanning the most popular genres
from action-adventure to classic role-playing games.
A title will cost only 1,200 Microsoft Points, which equates with $15. Microsoft
promised that this launch lineup is only the beginning, as Xbox 360 owners can
expect to see a growing catalog of Xbox games to download and own over the
coming year.
