“X-Men” will undergo a complete makeover or at least an
anti-age treatment. Twentieth Century Fox has assigned “Gossip Girl” creator and
executive producer Josh Schwartz to write “X-Men: First Class” and rejuvenate
the popular franchise.
Josh Schwartz, who has also contributed to the production of
Fox’s “The OC” and NBC’s “Chuck,” received a proposal from the film studio that
included the opportunity of directing the movie, but the 32-year-old screenwriter
has refused the offer, according to Variety.
Lauren Shuler Donner, who has served as a producer for the
three “X-Men” films and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which is due to be released
next year, will also produce “First Class” together with Simon Kinberg.
The film studio responsible with the distribution of the
“X-Men” productions has been trying to continue the popular and profitable
saga, as 2006’s “The Last Stand” grossed approximately $459 million.
In addition, Variety reported that Twentieth Century Fox
intended to use younger personas in future “X-Men” pictures, by focusing on
characters which have already been introduced in previous installments of the
franchise.
Although Fox would not offer further information with regard
to the projects, the studio is said to be working on another “X-Men Origins”
film, entitled “Magneto,” and is reportedly reflecting on creating a “Deadpool”
sequel, which would focus on the character impersonated by Ryan Reynolds in
“X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” “Wolverine” is starring actor Hugh Jackman and is
scheduled for a May 1, 2009, release in the United States.
