Wrong Dosage Measures Draws Wyeth Children's Medicines Recall

Wyeth announced on Monday its decision to voluntarily recall its Robitussin and Dimetapp cough, cold and chest congestion medicine for children between the ages of 2 and 5, in the United States.

Wyeth intends to replace the current marketed products in order to introduce another dosing cup, one that has a half-teaspoon mark, which is the recommended dose for children from 2 to under 6.

The pharmaceutical company will start putting the new products on the market, same medicine content but new dosage cup, starting early November. But replacing the million lots in the market now might take several months. Wyeth advices parents not to use the existing products for their children, but to wait until the product will have the new half-teaspoon cup.

The company said that there were no reports regarding an existing incident because of the medicines dosage and that parents should not panic, but they might ask doctors for information about proper dosage of the product.

In the past few weeks, there have been voluntary recalls of cough and cold children’s medicines from important manufacturers because there were cases of children’s deaths caused by incorrect dosage.

It is especially the case for cough and cold medicine for children containing specific decongestants, like: pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine or ephedrine, and antihistamines, like: diphenhydramine, brompheniramine or chlorpheniramine.

In the case of Robutsin and Dimetapp Whyet cough and cold medicine for children, since the withdrawal isn’t about product content, there is no reason for consumers to seek a refund, said Wyeth spokesman Doug Petkus.

Two weeks ago, advisory panels recommended to the U. S. Food and Drug Agency to ban cough and cold medication marketed for children under 6. The FDA usually follows its experts’ recommendations, but it hasn’t decided yet on this issue.
