Worst Floods in Mexico’s History Similar to New Orleans

The floods caused by the cold front that already left the oil industry along Mexico's Gulf coast in ruins, determined the government to evacuate about 20,000 people in the southern Mexican state of Tabasco.

The state of emergency was declared after several rivers of the region burst their banks due to the heavy rain storms and left about 70 percent of the swampy region under water.

The rivers that poured over the banks made of sand bags flooded hundreds of towns and villages, including the state capital Villahermosa. These are the worst floods in Mexico’s history, said Governor Andres Granier.

"Water normally covers 34 percent of Tabasco's surface, but at the moment, I can assure you that more than 70 percent is water," Granier said

According to the latest estimates, more than one million people are suffering from the effects of the floods and about 300,000 are reportedly trapped into their homes. Whit 70 per cent of Tabasco under water, the governor has urged the citizens that have boats to help the rescue teams in their effort.

President Felipe Calderon referred to the situation as being "extraordinarily grave" adding that this is one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit Mexico.

The state Governor Andres Granier has compared the disastrous situation in Tabasco, where more than 2.1 million residents had been affected, to the floods of New Orleans.

"We are just like New Orleans. All the water that comes in has to be pumped out," he told reporters.

The latest weather forecasts show that more rain will continue to pour on the state of Tabasco. However, the devastating rain storms are not linked the topical storm Noel, which was over the Caribbean.

According to the Associated Press, the Grijalva River, on of the biggest waterways in Tabasco, has risen 6.5 feet (2 meters) above the critical level, thus flowing into Villahermosa. The other big rivers are continuing to rise.

Until now the floods caused the death of one person.
