World of Warcraft, released by Blizzard, is one of the most played MMORPGs, massive multiplayer online role playing games, being discussed on hundreds of forums over the Internet and accused by many of spoiling the minds of youths. There is certainly a controversy related to WoW, as many see the game so addictive that it can completely transform a normal person to a full blown sociopath, so addicted to the virtual reality that getting out into the real world becomes a burden. Many praise WoW's ability to join so many people together, to make them feel like they’re part of something, belonging, sharing information and enjoying themselves.
Thursday night, at midnight, the third chapter in the famous game will be released. Called “The Wrath of The Lich King” the third installment in the World of Warcraft universe will bring new quests, new items and more bits of a story that really seems without an ending. Wrath of the Lich King is expected to oversell the previous installment, Burning Crusade, which sold 3.5 million copies in the first month. People at Blizzard expect Wrath of the Lich King to sell 5 million copies in the first month, making a record sell even for a huge company as Blizzard.
All in all, MMORPGs are here to stay and even if some say that WoW will forever remain the ultimate game of this nature, some think that, eventually, people will grow tired of it. It’s not about how addictive the game is, or how it can affect people and their relationship with others; a game that never ends doesn’t give one the feeling of accomplishing something.
