A custodian at the Oregon State Hospital’s Portland campus was arrested on Friday on charges of sodomy and officials misconduct.

Francisco Nunez, 56, of Milwaukie is accused of sodomizing a 47-year-old female patient four times over the course of a year at the facility at 1121 N.E. 2nd Ave. Nunez had been working for the department in housekeeping services for about five years.

There is also a witness saying that Nunez had sex with the patient, investigators say although they do not believe that he forced himself on the woman.

Nunez is charged on four counts of first-degree official misconduct and four counts of first-degree sodomy. He is being held on $1.1 million bail at the Multnomah County jail, pending a court appearance.

Following the incident, Oregon State Police has asked to expand its investigation to ensure the safety of all patients on the Portland campus. Also, an internal investigation of the state Department of Human Services is to begin this week.

“I will not tolerate a single patient at Oregon State Hospital living in fear of assault. This was a serious incident that occurred within a vulnerable population and calls for far-reaching investigation to safeguard the well being of all our patients,” Roy Orr, superintendent of the state mental hospital, said.

The woman is going to remain at the Portland campus under elevated care, Orr added.
