A man working at the Trump tower in the stylish SoHo neighborhood has reportedly died in an accident.
The accident took place Monday at about 2 p.m., when the unidentified worker fell to his death after a corner of the Trump SoHo hotel and condominium tower, located at 246 Spring Street near Varick Street, was sheared off.
Police has few details about the circumstances of the worker’s death, but initial investigations show that the fell from a height of about 30 feet. He wasn’t the only worker that fell off the building. A colleague of the dead worker fell several stories into some netting which saved his life.
According to several eyewitnesses, several fire crews and medical workers were deployed to the area of the incident as well as police officers from the First Precinct.
This deadly accident is another bad mark for Bovis Lend Lease, the company managing construction site. The same company was responsible with the demolition of the former Deutsche Bank building in Lower Manhattan in August, when two firefighters were killed in a fire that erupted in the structure.
According to some eyewitnesses, who saw the collapse, at least one giant steel beam fell. The crane was about 40 stories up, and the accident caused one floor to collapse into another.
The Trump SoHo hotel and condominium tower will have 42 stories and will most likely become the tallest building between Midtown and the financial district. Its opening is scheduled for early 2009.
