The 77-year-old woman, who crashed her car into Brockton Hospital back in October, killing a doctor
and a secretary, was sentenced to 18 months of probation.
Jane Berghold pleaded guilty to charges of motor homicide by
negligent operation and negligent operation of a motor vehicle in Brockton
District Court on Tuesday.
On October 15, her car plowed through the entrance of the
radiation treatment unit, killing Dr. Mark Vasa, 58, of Norwell, the unit’s
chief and 59-year-old hospital secretary Susan Plante of East
Bridgewater. Two other employees, a physician and a radiation
therapist, suffered non-life threatening injures.
Berghold was arriving at the hospital to consult with
doctors about radiation treatment for her breast cancer. Police say she stepped
on the gas pedal instead of the brake.
She was sentenced to 18 months of unsupervised probation and
had her driver license revoked.
A trial “just have been traumatizing for everybody involved,”
said Berghold’s lawyer Kevin Reddington, according to the Boston Globe.
Berghold refused to comment after the trial. She still faces
civil suits from the estates of Vasa and Plante. According to her lawyer, she
would cooperate in those. “She just feels very badly and wants to help the
estates in any way she can,” he added.
