A woman accused of cutting open a pregnant woman’s belly and
stealing her newborn was obsessed with having an infant and even had hallucinations
with babies’ cries and sounds, after suffering a miscarriage in February 1990,
according to court records.
Following the incident, Andrea Curry-Demus supposedly
stabbed one woman in the attempt to steal her baby. What’s more, the next day,
she allegedly abducted another infant from a hospital.
Andrea Curry-Demus, aged 38, of Wilkinsburg,
was indicted on Sunday on charges of homicide, kidnapping and related crimes in
the death of 18-year-old Kia Johnson.
The young woman’s decaying body, with her wrists and ankles
tied with duct tape and her face covered in plastic and tape, was found on
Friday in Andrea Curry-Demus’ apartment. The previous day, Curry-Demus had
brought the baby to a hospital, initially asserting that she was his mother and
later stating that she had paid for the child.
Court records reveal that a preliminary trial has been
programmed for Friday. Curry-Demus’ lawyer, Angela Carsia, informed the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that her client
intends to plead not guilty.
Nonetheless, court records for Curry-Demus’ 1990 criminal
cases show an image of a woman seemingly unable to cope with the loss of her
own baby in her seventh month of pregnancy. She was 21 when she miscarried and
told officials she had suffered another miscarriage at the age of 12.
While waiting for the verdict of her case 18 years ago,
Curry-Demus was hospitalized twice in a state mental clinic. A test found her
to suffer from severe depression. She also reported hearing hallucinations of
baby cries.
The Associated Press reported that Kia Johnson’s funeral
will be held on Friday in McKeesport,
according to her family.
