Woman Sentenced to 5 Years Probation after Trying to Trade Her Son

A woman from Davenport, Iowa accused of trying to trade her child in exchange of a wedding dress was sentenced to five years probation on Thursday.

Marcy Gant, 32, offered her 4-year-old son in exchange for a wedding dress and other wedding items worth $200 in October 2006, according to police. His son was immediately taken by the Iowa Department of Human services.

Gant could have been sentenced up to ten years in prison, as prosecutor Julie Walton asked in the court, citing “out-of-control behavior” because of alcohol consume. Instead, she was given five years on probation as her lawyer Lauren Phelps had requested, invoking her client good behavior in the last months.

“She’s making better choices. She’s doing things she needs to do,” Phelps said, adding she is keeping in touch with her children and maintaining a stable residence.

Gant will have to accomplish other tasks as well while being on probation according the court’s sentence. She is forbidden to consume any alcohol and obliged to contact the prosecution’s main witness in the case.

Gants will also have to submit to random tests for drugs and alcohol, consider the advice of mental health professionals and attend two Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week, according to Scott County District Judge James’ ruling.
