A box of crackers with an envelope stuffed with $10,000? Now that’s a pleasant surprise.
It happened to Debra Rogoff of Irvine, Calif., and to her daughter who found the envelope. However, he Irvine woman was an example and from the beginning did not even think about spending the money, but about finding the owner.
"We just thought, 'This is someone's money,'" she said. "We would never feel good about spending it," the woman added according to The Associated Press.
So the lucky family did not go on a shopping spree. They called police and were told that the money could have been part of a drug drop. A bit latter, police investigators found out from the store managers that an elderly woman had come in a few days earlier, panic-stricken due to the fact that she had mistakenly returned a box of crackers with her life savings in it.
The woman was from Lake Forest. She said she was depositing her money in the box instead of the bank because she had lost faith in it.
The Rogoff family did not even receive a “Thank you” from the woman, never mind a reward. The Rogoffs did get a fresh box of Annie’s Sour Cream and Onion Cheddar Bunny crackers from Whole Foods, the store managers said.
"I asked them if I could have another box of crackers," she said with a laugh.
