A New Jersey woman pleaded guilty to managing the daily activities of the Emperors Club VIP, the high-priced prostitution ring which brought down New York’s former governor, Elliot Spitzer.
The 23-year-old Cecil (Katie) Suwal acknowledged the fact that she was involved in running the prostitution ring, but the way she told it to a Manhattan federal judge was quite funny. With tears in her eyes, Suwal acted like she had no idea what a prostitution ring was. She said that "unfortunately" she was caught in the middle of “this disgusting thing” which charged its clients as much as $5,500-an-hour.
"I was involved in the daily operations of, the Emperors Club VIP or whatever that was, a prostitution ring that was attempting to launder money," Suwal told Judge Barbara S. Jones in Federal District Court in Manhattan.
“Basically, it was, I guess, a prostitution ring that was attempting to launder money, or whatever.”
The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate federal money laundering and prostitution laws. She could be sentenced to 21 to 27 months in prison, although the money laundering charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail. She will be sentenced September 12.
Suwal was responsible for recruiting prostitutes for the ring, fielding their e-mail applications
and posting their nearly nude bodies on a Web site. Her 62-year-old boyfriend, Mark Brener, who was the escort service's alleged ringleader, will most likely plead guilty next week.
However, according to her lawyer Alberto Ebanks, Suwal does not intend to cooperate with prosecutors in pending grand jury probes as a collaborator of hers, Temeka Lewis, did after pleading guilty in May. The latter was the one who fixed Spitzer's pre-Valentine's Day meeting in a Washington hotel with Emperors Club hooker Ashley Alexandra Dupré.
The rendezvous of the pair - "Client-9," and Kirsten - on February 13 in Washington, D.C. was monitored by federal law enforcement. Mr. Spitzer, then New York’s governor, was forced to resign two days after the whole thing surfaced.
According to court documents, two other defendants, Mark Brener and Tanya Hollander, are also negotiating with the government.
