Blizzard’s MMORPG World of Warcraft is… a behemoth. It’s the
undoubtedly largest game of its kind on the market, with almost 11 million total
subscribers. When the first expansion pack for WoW, The Burning Crusade hit
shelves last year, it sold 2.4 million copies in the UK
and Europe in
the first 24 hours. It has
been said that a $1 billion investment would be required to take on the
massive online RPG, and now Blizzard, backed by the $100 million they make each
month almost due to WoW alone, are determined to widen that gap by releasing
the second of what are to be yearly
expansions for the game: World of Warcraft – Wrath of The Lich King.
Blizzard yesterday announced that the Lich King expansion is
going to be released come November 13, thus meeting its goal to reach stores
before holidays. In preparation, the 3.0.2 patch brings a list of extensive
changes in order to bridge the way to the imminent release.
The release itself will bring about a whole new continent to
explore – Northrend, a chance to battle the main antagonist Arthas, The Lich King,
the game’s first new Epic character class – the Death Knight, and a new
profession, inscribing.
The expansion pack will be released in two flavours: one
standard edition costing $39.99, and the Collector’s Edition, which will set
you back $69.99, but will include a WoW: Wrath of The Lich King art book, 208
pages long and with exclusive concept art for the expansion; an exclusive
in-game pet: Frosty the baby frost wyrm; a behind-the scenes DVD with developer
interviews and commentary; an official soundtrack CD, featuring 21 tracks some
of which are exclusive; a mouse pad with a map of the Northrend continent and
two WoW TCG March of The Legion starter decks, including two exclusive
collector’s edition cards.
We will leave you with that, because we have just felt a great
disturbance in the Force, as if 10.9 million voices suddenly cried out in
unison: “Gief Epixxxx!!!”
