The most famous
voice in the U.S.A. died Monday. Don LaFontaine, the man who popularized
the catch phrase "In a world where...", passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center in Los Angeles from complications of a collapsed
lung, his agent Vanessa Gilbert said.
According to his website, LaFontaine started doing
voice-over work in the mid-1960s and went on to produce more than 5,000 movie
trailers and nearly 350,000 commercials.
Fellow voice-over artist Ashton Smith gave one of the best
descriptions of LaFontaine's talent: “When you die and go to heaven the voice
you hear is not Don's,” he said. “It's God trying to sound like Don.”
When an announcer didn't show up for a recording session in
1965, LaFontaine voiced his first narration, a promo for the film,
"Gunfighters of Casa Grande." Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer fell in love with
his voice and his incredible career began.
“The
Godfather”, “Batman Returns”, ”The Godfather", "Fatal
Attraction" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" are just a few of
the movies which featured his voice on their trailers. For a time in the late
'70s, LaFontaine was the official voice of Paramount Pictures. But still he
stated that his favorite work was one he did for the 1980 film "The Elephant
Man."
LaFontaine also voiced popular shows like “Entertainment Tonight”,
“Insider”
and hundreds of spots for radio and television. His other work included
commercials for McDonalds, Budweiser and voiceover work for all the major
television networks.
He recently made fun of himself in a series of television
commercials for Geico, a car insurance company, where he played himself telling
a customer: "In a world where both of our cars were totally under
water..."
He was married to the singer and actress Nita Whitaker and
had three daughters.
