With Fame Comes Malware! Celebrities Bad For Your PC

Eager to have your favorite star on your PC? You might want to think it over before downloading anything, McAfee warned, after compiling a list of “Riskiest Celebrities to Search on the Web.” As it appears, some of the most glamorous Hollywood celebrities also pose the greatest risk to infect your PC with spyware, spam, fishing, adware, viruses and other malware.

“Cybercriminals employ numerous methods, yet one of the simplest but most effective ways is to trick consumers into infecting themselves by capitalizing on Americans’ interest in celebrity gossip,” said Jeff green, senior vice president of McAfee’s Product Development & Avert Labs.

Atop of the risk list are Brad Pitt searches, which McAfee estimates give an 18 percent chance to infect the user’s PC, whether they want to download wallpapers, screensavers or pictures. And Pitt is not the only one, as other A-listers, such as Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and others, are also on the list.

It’s not that hard to imagine that cybercriminals “love” Hollywood’s most popular stars maybe more than their fans, simply because they can transform these fans into victims of their fake Web sites, which at first may appear legit, but in fact are likely to give them a lot of headaches.

While Brad Pitt screensaver searches returned over 50 percent malicious downloads, with spyware, adware and potential viruses, Beyonce ringtones put users at risk of divulging personal information to cybercriminals.

Justin Timberlake or Mariah Carey are also among the riskiest searches, returning results containing malware-laden downloads. Jessica Alba sites were red-ranked, after they were found to contain hundreds of malicious downloads, links to bad sites or misleading offers posted to gather personal information from users.
