Will Ferrell's semi-comedy Semi-Pro is a box office semi-flop, coming in first according to estimates, but failing to score a hit. The movie snatched $15 million this weekend, according to Box Office Mojo, somewhat too little for a $57 million film. Most people, with Ferrell first, had probably expected "Semi-Pro" to open somewhere above $20 million, but it was hurt by a restrictive "R" rating which kept out a part of the potential viewers.
Second ranked Sony's Vantage Point with $13 million, followed by Paramount's The Spiderwick Chronicles with nearly $9 million. The other new entry this weekend, The Other Boleyn Girl, is close behind with more than $8 million in revenues. Fox' Jumper is the last of the first five movies, with $7.6 million in ticket sales.
Will Ferrell’s latest attempt to make us laugh tries to be funny by exploiting every cliché out there about the sports, movies, '70s and so on. Will Ferrell plays the role of Jackie Moon, a one-time hit music wonder, who earned enough money to lose it in the American Basketball Association, by trying to manage the Flint Michigan Tropics.
But as he saw how to play basketball "one night on TV," Jackie Moon believes that the manager role is not enough for his true greatness and he also becomes the power forward, publicity coordinator and half-time choreographer. In fact, most of the 86 minutes of the movie are dedicated to Moon’s promotional stunts for his team.
The other new entry, "The Other Boleyn Girl," is about Queen Anne Boleyn’s sister, Mary, the "other" from the title, who was also one-time mistress of King Henry VIII. Set during the reign of Henry VIII (Eric Bana), a defining moment in England’s history, two sisters Anne (Natalie Portman) and Mary (Scarlett Johansson) Boleyn have to win the affection of the King due to the ambitions of their father and uncle, played by Mark Rylance and David Morrissey.
Meanwhile, No Country for Old Men returned in the first ten movies according to revenue at position #9 with $4 million.
