A powerful winter storm hit the US West Coast painting all landscapes in white. The storm featured snow, sleet and ice, blizzards and snow squalls. Traveling has become a dangerous adventure due to the winter storm and several people already died because of it.
Several flights were delayed at major airports such as San Francisco, California; Houston, Texas; Boston, Massachusetts; New Jersey and New York. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport canceled about 150 flights Sunday. The average time of delay on George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston was of five hours.
Two people died in a car crash on Interstate Highway 80 east of Des Moines, Iowa. The main cause of the crash was the treacherous weather conditions.
Also in Iowa, near the town of Remsen, the driver of a tractor used to remove snow died as the vehicle slipped off the driveway and overturned.
A chain crash involving at least 30 vehicles occurred on Sunday in southwestern Michigan on Interstate 94. One man died in the incident that shut down six miles of the eastbound lanes. At least 8 people were taken to nearby hospitals after the crash that involved about four semitrailer trucks and about a dozen cars.
A similar crash occurred on Interstate 43 where more than 20 vehicles piled up on Sunday in Wisconsin's Ozaukee County. The 8 people that were injured were treated and released, authorities said.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the states of Oregon and Washington. The region will be hit with heavy rain, sleet and snow until 10:00 am (1800 GMT) Monday. Several regions in Iowa and Illinois are under blizzard warnings.
As much as 70,000 homes and businesses in Indiana were left without electricity by a destructive ice storm. Repairing the electricity lines has proven to be very difficult due to high wind gusts of up to 30 mph.
In Washington, the weight of the snow gathered on a large tent over a temporary ice-skating rink in Bellevue caused the tent to collapse. Ten people were trapped under the tent and one girl suffered minor injuries. A similar incident took place in rural Waitsburg in eastern Washington where an unoccupied building housing a storage business collapsed due to weather-related causes.
According to the latest forecast, the northwest can expect five to ten inches of snow on Monday and more than a foot in the mountains. Authorities warned travelers and especially motorist if the “hazardous” winter weather conditions.
