The winter storm that hit parts of Texas and Kentucky killed 6 people so far and also caused power cuts in some areas leaving thousands of people without electricity and glazed roads causing numerous traffic accidents.
Texas authorities said five people were killed in traffic crashes related to the bad weather. A sixth victim died after falling from a bridge into the Trinity River. Police believe the main cause of the tragic incident were the treacherous icy roads. The man supposedly got out of his car after a crash and slipped from the bridge into the icy river.
As many as 27,936 homes and businesses were affected by the power outages caused by the winter storm, according to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.
Meteorologists at the National Weather Service expect the storm to get worse and issued freezing rain, ice and winter storm warnings for the state of Texas, for the Ohio Valley and into New England.
It snowed heavy in several regions. Some parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland were hit with 4 inches. In Missouri, Illinois and Indiana the snow level reached 6 inches, while Ohio was covered with 12 inches of snow. The ice was a quarter to a half-inch thick on some bridges and overpasses, the National Weather Service meteorologist Jesse Moore said.
Numerous flights bound for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were delayed due to snow and ice in “Philly,” the Federal Aviation Administration reported. Two crew members of a FedEx cargo plane were injured on Tuesday when the aircraft crashed on landing in Lubbock, Texas.
