Winona Ryder Joins ‘Star Trek’ Crew

Famous names continue to pour for the cast of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek XI” as Hollywood actress Winona Ryder landed the role of young Spock’s human mother.

According to a report in Variety, Paramount Pictures and director “Lost” director J.J. Abrams decided to hire Ryder to play Amanda Grayson. The casting came one day after the announcement that Bruce Greenwood will play original Enterprise captain, Christopher Pike.

As reported by StarTrek.com, ”Grayson was a schoolteacher from Earth who married the Vulcan diplomat Sarek and gave birth to Spock in 2230. She reunited with her son when she accompanied her husband aboard the Enterprise during the Babel Conference in 2267, and was instrumental in helping Sarek and Spock reconcile some of their differences.”

The actress, who kept a low profile since her arrest in 2001 for shoplifting, will be joining ”Heroes” star Zachary Quinto as young Spock, Chris Pine, who starred in “Just My Luck,” as Young Kirk, Karl Urban as Young Bones, Zoe Saldana as Young Uhura, John Cho as Young Sulu, Simon Pegg as Young Scotty and Anton Yelchin as Young Chekov.

In both the original series and in the Trek movies Spock’s mother was played by the recently deceased Jane Wyatt. She had her largest role in “Trek IV,” as Spock studies on Vulcan to recover his memory after his “Star Trek III” resurrection.

Actress Rachel Nichols is also rumored to have been cast as Janice Rand, who was originally played by Grace Lee Whitney. The “Alias” star recently told Toronto Sun that she’s “very restricted on what I'm allowed to say.  But yes, there's a good chance you'll see my shining face in the new Star Trek ... My mom even e-mailed me about it because she saw it (online) and I hadn't told her yet. There's a lot of buzz about it, but honestly, I don't even know the name of my character.”

Although details about the movie plot are being kept well under wraps, the upcoming “Trek” flick, which starts shooting this week, will reportedly take the Enterprise crew back to their early days at Starfleet Academy.

While the list of stars to play in the movie is pretty long, it does not include William Shatner, who gained fame for playing Captain Kirk in the original “Star Trek” series. Late last month, he said he was really shocked that he wasn’t cast in the role which he played in the television show from 1966 to 1969 and six of the subsequent movies.
