The husband of British singer Amy Winehouse, the equally
troubled some would say Blake Fielder-Civil, has pleaded guilty to charges of
assault and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The charges refer to a pub incident which occurred in 2006.
The 26-year-old Fielder-Civil has been in jail since November 2007, awaiting
trial. He admitted to assaulting James King, pub owner of Macbeth’s pub in London and also admitted
he had attempted to pervert the course of justice by offering King money to
withdraw his allegations and leave the country,
Judge David Radford had previously prevented the British
media from reporting on the case and lifted the restrictions Monday, reports
Reuters UK, quoting an official at Snaresbrook
Crown Court, east London.
Three of Fielder-Civil’s co-defendants in the case also
pleaded guilty to charges related to the crime. King faces trial on the charge
of perverting the course of justice after pleading not guilty, adds Reuters.
Winehouse and Fielder-Civil married last May in Miami, Florida,
only to have their freshly started marriage interrupted by the husband’s being taken
into custody. Winehouse appeared at London’s
Snaresbrook Crown Court last week to support Fielder-Civil during pre-trial
hearings.
The defendants are to be sentenced at a later date.
Fielder-Civil faces a maximum sentence of five years in
prison for the assault charge. He may receive additional prison time for the
perverting the course of justice charge or a fine.
The couple has had a rocky first year of marriage, what with
the drug abuse stories, being arrested in Norway for possession of cannabis,
being photographed wandering the streets of London all bruised and scratched
and, of course, Fielder-Civil being incarcerated.
