A home video allegedly showing British singer Amy Winehouse inhaling cocaine smoke has attracted the attention of Scotland Yard who said Wednesday it would investigate the circumstances.
Earlier this week, British tabloid The Sun shared with the world a controversial video allegedly showing troubled singer Amy Winehouse on a 19-minute drug binge, reigniting fears that the 25-year-old is on a downward spiral to self-destruction.
Alcohol and substance abuse rumors have been repeatedly and insistently associated with the “Rehab” singer yet this incident, should the video prove authentic, could jeopardize her career.
The Sun published photo stills from the video Tuesday and posted an edited version of it on its website, describing how Winehouse inhaled crack cocaine, said she had taken six Valium pills and snorted powdered ecstasy and cocaine. The video was apparently filmed last Friday, during a house party.
Scotland Yard confirmed to CNN Wednesday that it had received the video from The Sun and that the material would be examined.
The repercussions could be serious for Winehouse, who was arrested along with her husband Blake Fielder-Civil in October at a Norwegian hotel for marijuana possession. The singer is due back in court in Bergen, Norway on Feb. 29 to appeal against a fine for possessing cannabis.
In late November, Winehouse said she had not been aware that, under Norwegian law, paying the fine is equivalent to pleading guilty. She said she did not understand the Norwegian-language charges she agreed to and that she now fears this incident could prevent her from working in the U. S.
This new incident could jeopardize her visit to the U. S. next month for the Grammy awards, should authorities deny her a visa. She has received six Grammy nominations, including record and song of the year for “Rehab” and best album for “Back to Black.”
As to rumors that her record label Island Records could choose to end its collaboration with the singer, there has been no confirmation from the company so far. A statement issued Wednesday said: “We are deeply disappointed and upset by these latest revelations and are doing everything we can to offer Amy our full support in dealing with her problems.”
It appears that Winehouse’s condition has worsened over the past several weeks due to her husband being arrested on charges of perverting the course of justice following a bar fight. He is currently behind bars.
