Windows Mobile Cloud Sync Application Revealed

Two days ago, Microsoft made one little mistake and opened the website getskybox.com a little earlier than scheduled. The website hosts information together with a sign up box for the My Phone synchronization service that had been announced during the Consumer Electronics Show 2009.

Initially, the Redmond giant had planned to release the cloud-based sync service later this month, after the GSMA World Mobile Congress would take place. The congress will be organized in Barcelona, starting February 16. Steve Ballmer, CEO at Microsoft, is expected to hold a keynote speech during the conference in which he will provide details about the new service. Still, some tech websites, including Engadget, have already reported the features of the online application.

The details about the My Phone service were provided on the home page during the time that the website was available. According to the official description on getskybox.com, the application will give each user 200 MB of storage space.

Briefly, the service links media content and personal data on any smart phone that has Windows Mobile 6 to the Internet. This means that videos and pictures along with calendar appointments and text messages can be uploaded to the internet.

The content uploaded on the web can be shared with other My Phone users, but the service can also serve as a backup feature when switching to a new device. Another feature is the automated update process between the phone and the My Phone server, which takes place every day as long as the smart phone is connected to the Internet.

However, a downturn of the service is that to-do notes and e-mails linked to an Exchange server are not available for synchronization. According to the website’s description, the service will be available for all Windows Mobile users and it will be free of charge.
