William Balfour, the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson’s sister Julia, has been arrested in the slayings of Hudson’s mother, brother and seven-year-old nephew.

Chicago police announced the arrest of William Balfour, 27, in the triple homicide of Darnell Donerson, 57, Jason Hudson, 29, and Julian King, 7. The young man has been held for questioning by police following the discovery of Donerson and Hudson’s lifeless bodies in their Chicago home on October 24 but was eventually released without charge. The little boy’s body was found three days later in an abandoned SUV.

Balfour was named a person of interest in the murder investigation from the beginning and was the sole known suspect. He was detained for violating his parole. The former convicted former served a 7-year sentence for attempted murder and vehicular hijacking. He was released in 2006.

The Illinois Department of Corrections issued a warrant for Balfour for violating terms of his parole by possessing a weapon and not attending anger management classes and a substance abuse program.

Law enforcement sources told the media Balfour denied being involved in the murders and claimed to have been in good relations with the Hudson family. The 27-year-old’s current girlfriend told police in early November that the convicted felon admitted being at the Hudson family home on the morning of the slayings and admitted to her being involved in the killings of Donerson and Hudson.

During a closed hearing in Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill last month, officials displayed evidence showing that William Balfour owned a gun similar to the one used in the October 24 murders. The weapon was found in the same area as the abandoned SUV containing the body of Julian King.

Illinois prison officials decided at the time to keep Balfour in custody for at least three more weeks - at least until a hearing scheduled for December 3, while investigations in the Hudson multiple murder case continued.

He was arrested him on a warrant for murder on Monday, just two days before his scheduled appearance before the parole board.
