Jennifer Hudson's estranged brother-in-law, William Balfour, was arrested on Monday for the tragic shooting deaths of the Oscar winner's mother, brother and 7-year-ol nephew, Chicago Tribune reported.
"We have obtained an arrest warrant for William Balfour. He was released to Chicago detectives," Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Monique Bond was quoted by Reuters as saying, adding that Balfour would be charged with three counts of murder.
Police initially retained the 27-year-old former husband of Hudson's sister Julia, on the same day the murders were committed, but he was later transferred to the Stateville Correctional Center in Illinois on suspicion of parole violation stemming from an attempted murder conviction in 1999. He was arrested on Monday, December 1, and released to detectives as he awaited formal charges in the case.
A police spokesperson said a press conference would take place once Balfour would be formally charged for killing Darnell Hudson Donerson, Jason Hudson and Julian King.
During a close hearing last month, investigators presented evidence that Balfour possessed a gun matching the murder weapon in the case of Hudson's three family members' deaths. Up until December 1, Balfour, who was married to Hudson's sister Julia for almost two years, was identified only as a "person of interest." He refused to take a lie detector test and stopped cooperating with the case, police sources have said. So far, no motive for the murders was disclosed.
The bodies of Hudson's mother and brother were found shot to death inside Donerson's house on October 24 while Julian King's body was discovered four days later in a stolen sport utility vehicle parked 10 miles from the family's home. According to police, the boy was taken alive from the house and shot in the car. A handgun used in the slayings was found nearby.
