It is hard to believe that “The Dark Knight” will really
manage to sink “Titanic.” Although the latter faces tough competition from the
Batman movie, the Christopher Nolan-directed production will remain on the
second spot with approximately $510 million to $520 million, Warner Bros.
Pictures expects, as reported by Reuters.
In addition to this, “The Dark Knight’s” winnings are far
from surpassing “Titanic’s” (1997) remarkable $601 million
The unbeatable popularity of James Cameron’s film may be
payable to Leonardo DiCaprio’s fame among teenage girls who went to see the
movie over and over again, helping the well-known blockbuster earn $1.8 billion
worldwide.
Nevertheless, more than a decade later, “The Dark Knight”
went sky-high to an impressive $441.6 million domestically and $263.5 million
overseas in only four weekends from its big-screen debut. Since it smashed so
many records, the Batman sequel was instantly believed to sail even further
than “Titanic” did.
Nowadays major releases record tremendous sums in their
first couple of weekends. For instance, “The Dark Knight” brought in $313.8
million domestically in only 10 days from its theatrical release. However,
older productions kept on luring audiences even after several weeks. So here we
are. “The Dark Knight’s” big-screen popularity may soon come to an end because
of its upcoming home video release.
According to Reuters, informed sources said a December
release is very likely to coincide with the profitable holiday gift-giving
season. Furthermore, this is one of the main reasons why the film starring
Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger is not expected to fill the almost
$160 million gap which stands between the first two spots of the biggest movies
of all times.
