Actor Will Ferrell made a comeback on the prime-time pre-election edition of "Saturday Night Live" as President George Bush, joining Tina Fey's Gov. Sarah Palin.
Reprising his famed impersonation of President Bush, the former SNL star opened the show with an address to the nation where he said the election was between "the hot lady and the Tiger Woods guy," both of whom were very "patriotized" and displayed "much characterization."
He then gave his endorsement to McCain and Palin, something that they apparently did not want. Ferrell said he was unaware that his approval ratings were low because he had several months ago declared the Oval Office a "bummer free zone."
Introducing Senator John McCain and Sarah Palin, Ferrell’s George Bush was surprised to see only Tina Fey entering the Oval Office and asked her where McCain was. She then said that when the Senator heard Bush was going to publicly endorse them, he disappeared. Ferrell informed her that her role as vice president was "the most important in the land" and that the "president can do nothing without checking with the vice president." Fey corrected him that he had it backward.
When Darrell Hammond finally entered the scene as John McCain, he silently had to accept Bush's endorsement. With pain visible on Hammond’s McCain face, Ferrell did his best George W. face and looked into the camera saying: "When you think of John McCain, think of me, George W. Bush… when you’re in the voting booth, before you vote, think of this face. A vote for John McCain is a vote for George Bush."
Ferrell’s Bush impersonation ranks in the pantheon of all-time Saturday Night Live political satires. Fey as Palin will certainly join that group which includes Chevy Chase as former President Gerald Ford, Dana Carvey as former President George H.W. Bush, and Dan Ackroyd as former President Richard Nixon.
