Wildfires Near Sacramento, Big Sur Residents Return Home

Wind gusts changed the direction of wildfires towards the northern parts of Sacramento. The blazes burned numerous homes on Tuesday and left the residents of those areas with no other alternative but to flee their towns, Californian state officials said.

At least 40 homes caught fire in the Butte County community of Concow. The wind blew embers across fire containment lines and numerous homes were charred said Todd Simmons, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman.

Nearly 1000 residents were evacuated from Concow and Yankee Hill, nearly 85 miles north of Sacramento, as firefighters went from door to door to warn people about the danger their would bee facing if they were to stay.

"Right now we're battling the weather and the erratic winds. Whatever the winds are doing, that's pretty much what the fire's going to do," Simmons said.

The weather conditions are making things very difficult for firefighters. Winds of nearly 30mph helped the wildfires spread faster. One of nearly 30 lightning-sparked wildfires charred as much as 47,000 acres over the past couple of weeks. The humidity has also suddenly dropped and the recent 10-degree spike in temperature made life tougher for the firefighters.

However, the huge efforts made by the fire rescue teams weren’t in vain. Nearly 40% of the fire complex burning across the Butte County was contained. Many of those fires were ignited by a lighting storm two weeks ago.

The wildfire threatening the Big Sur let up just enough to permit hundreds of evacuated residents to go back through smoke and ash and check on what was left of their homes Tuesday.

The Butte Lightning Complex Fire, sparked on June 21, was carried by gusts of wind that reached 44 mph up and around the town of Paradise, said fire officials, who woke residents at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday and told them to leave their homes.
