Wii to Get New Peripherals

During the E3 press conference, Nintendo’s most important announcement was made with regard to MotionPlus, the Wiimote-pluggable peripheral that enables gamers to experience true one-to-one movement while playing. MotionPlus will be included in the Wii Sports: Resort pack, when it arrives next spring.

Nintendo also presented its upcoming Animal Crossing: City Folk title. The game will feature Wii Speak, a peripheral that, while placed on the TV, enables rooms of people to talk to one another while fishing or redecorating. The game is scheduled for release this holiday season.

Nintendo’s second important announcement was Wii Music. Players will be given the chance to play fifty different instruments, such as guitars, violins or Taiko drums. Wii Fit’s Balance Board will be usable for playing the drums and eventually, experienced gamers will actually know how to play real drums.

Several new games were announced as well, including Shaun White's Snowboarding (a game that also makes use of the balance board), Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades and the DS-exclusive Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown.

According to market research firm NPD Group’s study last month regarding game console sales, Wii was on top of the list again with 675,100 units. Wii’s situation has been kept constant thanks to the Wii Fit, launched in the U.S. on May 19. Since the console’s release, sale numbers have been going through the roof and supply shortages keep being reported. A distant second place went to Nintendo as well, as its DS console recorded sales of 452,600 units.
