Wii Tops Japan Consoles Sales, PS3 Still Lagging

Not that it would be a surprise to anyone these days, but recent data collected by Japanese firm Enterbrain show that Wii outsells PS3 in Japan by a factor of 6 to 1, further fueling the need of a price drop for Sony’s 5KG monster.

Despite the good news that PS3’s failure rate is around 1% (compared to Xbox 360’s 33%- as reported by Reuters), it appears that Nintendo Wii’s ZERO failure rate (yes, it’s that good…), the neat price and the attractive software pack are enough arguments to sustain strong sales, at least for Japan.

According to Enterbrain, Nintendo sold 270,974 Wii consoles last month while Sony sold 41,628 PS3s. Moreover, since Wii’s inception on the market Nintendo saw more than 2,76 million units sold, compared to only 970,270 PlayStation 3s sold since November last year.

About 17,616 Xbox 360 consoles were sold in June.

As a result of Wii’s success and DS’ already famous appeal to customers, Nintendo’s shares have more than doubled in less than a year, propelling the Japanese gaming veteran to a market value of more than $49 billion. By comparison, Sony is worth around $50.77 billion (but has a much broader business span, including its core electronics division and the famous Sony Pictures division responsible for the Spiderman 3 hit). Nintendo actually surpassed its home ground rival for a short period of time in June.

Wii is also outselling Sony's PlayStation 3 console by 4 to 1 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 console by 2 to 1 in the U.S., the world's largest videogame market, according to NPD Group Inc.
