For Nintendo Wii the future looks bright. After the gaming
console was considered an outsider in the fierce battle for the gaming market
now the little console that could outsold its main competitors PS3 and Xbox
360.
And the demand for Nintendo Wii is still high. Unfortunately
for all the gamers who had hopes to get their hands on a Wii this Christmas,
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime announced a bad news.
During his interview with Mercury News,
Fils-Aime said that the Japanese company has troubles to sustain the rapid
demand for the Wii.
“The issue is not a lack of production. The issue is we went
in with a curve that was aggressive, but the demand has been substantially more
than that. And the ability to ramp up production and to sustain it is not a
switch that you flick on. We're working very hard to make sure that consumers
are satisfied this holiday, but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet
demand. As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won't.” Fils-Aime
explained.
For those who still want to buy a Wii this Christmas
Fils-Aime offered some advices:
“(They) should have a range of outlets that they are
frequenting: a Target, a Wal-Mart, a Best Buy, a Toys R Us, a GameStop, Circuit City, all of the likely suspects. They
ought to talk to the manager and ask them, "When do you get your
deliveries?"”
According to data released earlier this month by VGChartz,
Nintendo Wii is leading the gaming consoles sales with approximately 11.45
million units sold (3.59 million in Japan, 4.69 in the US and 3.17 in other
areas) compared to Xbox 360’s 10.89 million units (only 440,000 in Japan, 7.03
million in the US and 1.38 million in the rest of the world). According to
VGChartz, PlayStation 3 holds only 17% of the next-gen console market, with
4.57 million units sold.
Nintendo Wii is a big success and in July Nintendo has
revised upward its earnings projections for the financial year ending March
2008. The company said it expects a net profit of 245 billion yen (2.03 billion
dollars) for the year, up from the previous projection of 175 billion yen, due
to the strong sales of Wii and Nintendo DS.
Also in May George Harrison, marketing chief at Nintendo of
America, said that Nintendo expects to sell as many as 35 million Wii consoles
in the United States and approach the record 38.2 million PlayStation 2s sold
by Sony. Harrison indicated also the year in
which Nintendo hopes to achieve its goal: 2012.
Let’s hope that since then they will be able to solve their
production troubles.
