The Grammy Awards weekend was full of events, starting with Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday night when Whitney Houston stole the show with her highly anticipated performance.
Sporting a leopard-print corset dress, the 45-year-old singer, who publicly battled drug addiction and went through a painful divorce from Bobby Brown, looked in good health as she performed a four-song medley which included “It's Not Right but It's Okay” and “I'm Every Woman,” a cover song that's been part of her repertoire forever.
“I've got it, I've got it!” a glamorous-looking Houston sang early Sunday morning as she belted a line from one of her classic hits.
Party host Clive Davis, Sony Music's chief creative officer, said that Houston, who hasn’t released a record since 2002, will team up with hitmaker David Foster next week to record a ballad called “I Didn't Know My Own Strength.” Davis was one of the key people in establishing Houston’s career.
“We all crossed our fingers that her beautiful story would end (happily),” said Jamie Foxx, who stood at the front of the stage and took video of Houston like he was just another fan in the crowd. “This is a new beginning.”
Although she sounded slightly restrained, it can all be blamed on nerves. No doubt the pressure was on big-time, especially since her act followed the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. The show also featured performances from Rod Stewart and Leona Lewis.
