"American Idol" winner David Cook maintained his humble attitude following his overwhelming victory on Wednesday's finale, although one might think he is entitled to at least a little showing off.
All of Cook's interviews since he was crowned the seventh American Idol, with 56 percent of the total 97.5 million votes, are reflecting besides the excitement of his win, genuine modesty.
"I walked into this with no expectations, and I walk out with no expectations," the 25-year-old rocker from Blue Springs, Mo., told reporters backstage right after the show. "It's a crapshoot. I could walk out of this arena and be an average Joe tomorrow."
Even judge Simon Cowell, who early in the season called him "smug," noted in his famous and surprising apology that Cook was one of the "most sincere and nice competitors" he ever met.
"You know, I didn't really change much of anything, as strange as it is," Cook explained, during a teleconference with journalists Friday. "I didn't have any expectations as to what the show was going for do me, or what I was going to do for the show. I went into it as an opportunity to expose myself musically to a large audience. And so my confidence level never really wavered, and maybe that's what got misinterpreted as cocky and arrogant. But I think maybe as the season went on, he saw the work I was putting in — not just to my own stuff — but really to make it a positive working environment for everybody."
Cook said he had come full circle in his "Idol" pursuit.
"In August, I stood in line in Omaha with no intention of auditioning. Tonight I stood with the same two people I stood in line with," said Cook, who attended the Idol audition with his brother and mother.
While the competition is over, Cook's musical career is just about to take off, after the Top 10 Idols complete the traditional three-month U.S. tour starting this July, which Cook will be obviously headlining. David Archuleta, the runner up, will also be making his presence known with his powerful vocals. Tickets for the concerts in various locations all across U.S. are already selling out.
Asked about his future album, Cook gave some hints about the songs that are going to be on it, saying "It's going to be a mixture of my writing, and hopefully writing with some other people. But the bottom line is I just want to come out of the gate with a solid record, so if I can do that, I'll be happy."
In the meantime, the "American Idol" tour tickets are not the only
stuff selling out; Cook managed to take the lead of the iTunes music
downloads charts. Four of Cook's songs, "The Time of My Life," which
was his first single and three other songs he sang during the Idol
finale, figured in the first four slots of Apple's online music store.
