Most celebrities enjoy giving their offspring names as original as possible, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale make exception.
Naming their newborn son Zuma Nesta Rock, singer Gwen Stefani and her musician husband, Gavin Rossdale "have proven decisively that they're masters in choosing names that are both highly unusual and carry a lot of personal meaning," said baby name expert Pamela Redmond Satran, co-author of The Baby Name Bible, quoted by Usmagazine.com.
A very interesting name, Nesta turns out to be Bob Marley’s original name. According to statements Rossdale gave in an interview, Zuma beach is where he had a revelation and decided to turn his life around and become successful, rich and famous. Since it worked, he made the decision to pass that revered name on to his second son. His first son was named after the capital of Jamaica, Kingston.
"They've continued their own place-naming tradition by naming their son after Zuma Beach in Malibu," Satran explained, citing a profile of Rossdale which said he had had an epiphany that had been the starting point for his career.
"He was standing on Zuma Beach in the early morning after working all night as a production assistant on a music video and was quoted as saying he realized he was wasting his time," Satran said. "He drove up the coast, slept in his car, and started making the moves that would launch his career."
Zuma's second middle name, Rock, might be a nod to "Rock Steady," the third studio album from Stefani's band No Doubt. Rock Steady was primarily recorded in Jamaica and featured a reggae-heavy sound, rounding out the Bob Marley love for the musical clan.
Stefani gave birth to Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Thursday, weighing 8.5 pounds.
"Mother, baby and family are all happy and healthy," Stefani's publicist said in a statement. The couple, who married in 2002, already has one son, Kingston, who was born in May 2006. Rossdale also has an 18-year-old daughter with Pearl Lowe, former frontwoman of 1990's band Powder.
