The Golden Globe Awards was originally offered exclusively to NBC to broadcast it. Yet, on January 11, Jorge Camara, the HFPA president, announced that there will be no restrictions for the media for the January 13 press conference. As a result, CNN, E!, TV Guide Network and KNBC-TV aired the 31-minute event which took place on Sunday at the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association released the full list of the Golden Globes winners and most of the prizes went to the political shows, rather than to the lighter movies.
“Slumdog Millionaire,” which had previously won the honors for director Danny Boyle, writer Simon Beaufoy, star Dev Patel and composer A.R. Rahman together with the one for best picture at the Critics’ Choice Awards, now won the trophies for Best Motion Picture-Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Original Score.
The mini-series broadcast by HBO about the second U.S. president, “John Adams,” picked up four prizes for Best Miniseries, Best Actress for Laura Linney, Best Actor for Paul Giammatti and Best Supporting Actor for Tom Wilkinson.
“30 Rock,” the NBC comedy written and produced by Tina Fey won three Golden Globes for Best TV Comedy, Best Comedy Actress and Actor for her and her co-star, Alec Baldwin. Fey won a great amount of publicity this year, which had also brought her an Emmy. She managed to reach a nationwide audience for her satirical interpretations of the Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
Other awards were given to “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” for Best Comedy while “Revolutionary Road” starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio won the Best Actress Awards. Mickey Rourke won the Best Actor trophy for his role in “The Wrestler.”
