The “Access Hollywood” interview in which Senator Barack Obama’s two daughters appear, has stirred a little bit of a controversy both because the presidential candidate has repeatedly said that he wants to preserve the privacy of children, and because after the interview Mr. Obama said that he will not allow another one.
The interview was taken while the Obama family was celebrating the birthday of their oldest daughter, Malia, aged 10. The birthday party coincided with the Fourth of July, and took place in Montana, where Barack Obama was campaigning for the future elections.
The two girls were very well-behaved and nice and told funny stories about their father shaking the hands of their schoolmates that came to visit them and how he leaves his suitcase everywhere when he comes home from work. Together with Michelle Obama, the Seantor’s wife, they joked about their father’s fashion sense in a most candid way.
While the interview certainly puts the presidential candidate in a very good light, Mr. Obama said that he wouldn’t have his daughters in front of the cameras again and that the whole thing was a mistake, as he and his wife were caught off guard during the birthday party.
Some newspapers have rushed to blame Senator Barack Obama, thinking that by allowing his daughters to be interviewed, he wanted to benefit of his children’s and his family’s image, and that him being very strict about not allowing cameras to bother his daughters was mere hypocrisy.
However, there is no evidence in Mr. Obama’s past that would suggest him being capable of doing such a thing. I personally think that the episode is, how Mr. Obama calls it, a mistake, and the fact that he wouldn’t allow any further interviews with his daughters is just a gesture of him protecting his family.
