What Americans Enjoyed This Weekend: Max Payne

The super action movie "Max Payne" starring Mark Wahlberg succeeded in shooting its way to the top of the North American box office this weekend by making its début with $18 million to outdo Oliver Stone's long debated film, the biography of George W. Bush. “Max Payne,” based on the video game, was seen from 3,239 locations. The fact that a lot of fans of the game anxiously went to see what the movie adaptation is all about.

After "Max Payne" the race got pretty tight. Disney’s “Chihuahua” declined just 37% in its third weekend to gross an estimated $11.2 million, thus being this weekend’s second most watched film with $11.2 million. "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" had been the Number 1 movie the previous two weekends. In case you missed this one, it is a movie about Chloe, a ritzy Beverly Hills Chihuahua that finds herself lost in Mexico and is in desperate need of assistance in order to get back home.

Civil rights era movie "The Secret Life of Bees" was just behind with $11.1 million. The adaptation of the Sue Monk Kidd best seller had the highest screen average ($6,945) than any film in the top 10, indicating that viewers are really into this kind of stories nowadays. The film stars Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo and it is a drama about a troubled teen learning life lessons through the beekeeping operations of three Southern sisters.

Both "Max Payne" and "The Secret Life of Bees" were released by Fox thus placing the studio back on top.

Returning to “W,” it debuted at Number 4 with a take of $10.6 million. But it seems that Americans don’t necessarily want to find out any kind spicy details related to their current President’s way to the top now that his time in the office is coming to an end. "We felt it was very important to release the film after the presidential debates but before the election," Rothenberg said. "We felt interest in the election would be at its height, and interest in George W. Bush would be much greater now than after January. We feel we have a good corridor over the next two weeks." But it seems they didn’t quite hit the bull’s eye.

Coming on fifth place is "Eagle Eye,” with $7.3 million. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, Billy Bob Thornton, and Rosario Dawson, the film is an “interesting” attempt for a psychological thriller.

All in all, this weekend's estimated grosses at the box office are 12% above the same weekend last year, with the top 10 films bringing in $80.8 million.
