Just like the previous winner of the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, 10-year-old Stump earned his breed some deep admiration and respect after being named “Best in Show” Tuesday night at New York's Madison Square Garden.
With his beautiful, shining, chestnut-brown coat, the little legs and the sad, intelligent face, Stump won everyone over and set a new record by becoming the oldest dog in the history of the canine competition to be crowned a winner. It was also the first time a Sussex spaniel was awarded the title. However, the breed, which originated as a hunting companion in England, was among the first to be recognized by the American Kennel Club.
Stump, who beat out nearly 2,500 dogs in 170 breeds, has not competed since 2004 after becoming seriously ill. It's a “miracle,” his trainer Scott Sommer told The Associated Press. “He got very sick, His body just quit... here he is now winning the Westminster Show and I'm just like thrilled.”
Formally named “Ch Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee,” Stump lives with his trainer in Houston. His victory is even more remarkable considering the mysterious illness he overcame back in 2005 when he almost died. He eventually recovered after spending 19 days in a Texas veterinary clinic.
Last year’s “Best in Show” winner was a gorgeous little Beagle named Uno. Following his victory, the 4-year-old dog got endorsement deals and went on a world tour.
