West, Alicia Keys, Al Green and Others Honored at BET Awards

Rapper Kanye West and hip-hop group UGK have won two prizes each Tuesday at the Black Entertainment TV (BET) Awards, an event that honors black recording artists, actors and athletes.

West was awarded the prize for best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration for the “Good Life”, which featured T-Pain.

Houston rap duo UGK was declared best group and also won video of the year award for International Player's Anthem (I Choose You) featuring Outkast.

"This is hard for me to accept tonight. We did an incredible job, I feel, but it's hard to do this with my brother not being here," Bun B, the surviving half of UGK, said in the memory of his defunct longtime partner Pimp C, who passed away in December.

Alicia Keys was awarded the Best Female R&B Artist title, while teen sensation Chris Brown, who topped the U.S. singles chart last year with “Kiss Kiss” was named Best Male R&B Artist in the same category.

Keys, going for the heights with a successful worldwide tour, a chart-topping album and a forthcoming film, shared the stage with three leading female band acts from the 1990s -- TLC, En Vogue and Sisters with Voices -- for a blend of R&B music. Then, she offered a sincere support to Obama, who would be the first African-American elected to the nation's highest office.

"I want to dedicate this award to the end of the word can't. That word is dead, we don’t know that word. Obama, y'all!", she exclaimed.

Meanwhile, Missy Elliott nabbed the award for Best Female Hip-hop Artist, Marvin Sapp took Best Gospel Artist, and the prize for Best New Artist went to the Dream.

In the acting categories, awards were handed out to Halle Berry and Denzel Washington.

Lil Wayne received the Best New Rap Artist award, which was voted for by viewers.

Taking along one of his awards on stage, West said to the crowd they were blessed to be in the presence of fellow rapper T-Pain, who was nominated for five awards for his work with other artists.

The evening's most emotional moment came when veteran soul singer Al Green, beneficiary of a lifetime achievement award, got the audience in the L.A. Shrine Auditorium on its feet singing and dancing, while performing his classic 1970s hit "Let's Stay Together."
