Web Site Operators Investigated For Not Taking Action To Prevent Young Man’s Live Suicide

Abraham Biggs Jr. was found dead in his father's bed Wednesday, 12 hours after he first declared on the Web site for bodybuilders that he planned to take his own life. He took a fatal drug overdose in front of an Internet audience. Members of a discussion board commented on the event as it unfolded. And although some viewers contacted the Web site to notify police, authorities did not reach his house in time.

Biggs' father told The Associated Press that he believes his son's post was a cry for help and that he is appalled that no one responded before it was too late. The Pembroke Pines Police Department confirmed in an interview over the weekend that they are investigating the role that Web site moderators and online community members played in the situation. People who claimed to have witnessed the event said in online postings that they tried to get help from Web site moderators who did not take the situation seriously and respond until members made several pleas for help.

Keith Whitworth, a professor of sociology at Texas Christian University who studies Internet fraud and social networking sites, said Biggs' act is similar to suicide pacts in Japan and school shootings in the USA that end with suicide: all are well planned by people seeking fame. Biggs was a student at Broward College and died of a combination of benzodiazepines, which he was prescribed for bipolar disorder, and opiates.

Biggs, who suffered from bipolar disorder himself, announced his intentions through a series of posts. According to The Globe and Mail, Biggs posted a suicide note on the bodybuilding forum that read: “I want my life to end. I am tired of f***ing up everything. I am tired of people always telling me that they do not like me. I am tired of trying to be decent.”
