Mark Felt, the “Deep Throat” source that helped Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein solve the Watergate scandal, which brought Richard Nixon’s years as President of the United States to an end, died Thursday at age 95.
Felt had a congestive heart failure condition, but the exact cause of his death was not immediately determined, according to the Press Democrat newspaper in Santa Rosa, California.
Mark Felt remained in the dark as the anonymous „Deep Throat” source who helped bring down President Richard Nixon for 30 years and it was only in 2005, at age 91, that an article in Vanity Fair magazine written by Felt’s family lawyer revealed his role in the Watergate case.
The magazine tried to get the information out of Woodward and Bernstein, but the two had promised to keep their source’s identity a secret until the latter’s death. Nevertheless, when attorney John O’Connor disclosed that Mark Felt was the one going by the „Deep Throat” nickname, Woodward himself wrote about his relationship with the source of his and Bernstein’s 1974 stories.
When the Watergate scandal was cracked with the help of FBI official Mark Felt, Nixon was forced to resign in 1974, while over 30 other official figures were convicted or pleaded guilty, including Attorney General John Mitchell. The latter was sentenced to 19 months in prison for conspiracy, obstruction of justice and perjury.
Last month, Bernstein met with his source for the very first time, when he and Woodward visited Felt in Santa Rosa, since „Deep Throat” only communicated with Woodward during the Watergate scandal.
