Water Main Break Floods River Road, Traps Motorists

A massive torrent of water created by a water main break in suburban Maryland trapped several motorists on River Road in Washington. Rescue crews in helicopters from the Maryland State Police and U.S. Park Police dropped metal rescue baskets to trapped motorists.

Several people were rescued and more rescue teams in boats from the county's Swift Water and Technical Rescue are heading towards trapped motorists, said Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire Department.

The road was flooded in a few minutes after the 60-inch diameter water main break. The break caused a four-foot deep, 60-feet wide wall of water, police officials told reporters.

At least 15 vehicles with 15 ore more people were trapped. Some of them have already been rescued.

"These folks were probably caught off-guard in a situation they hadn't predicted," said Mr. Piringer according to FOX News.

The temperature was chilly. According to the National Weather Service the temperature was around 20 degrees. This caused some victims to require EMS due to hypothermia.

The 66-inch water pipe burst shortly before 8 a.m. The massive torrent flooded River Road near Congressional Country Club in Bethesda.

Some rescues were broadcasted live on CNN and local TV stations. In one of the rescues, a woman and a child desperately climbed into an iron basket lowered near them by a rescue helicopter. The operation was very difficult because of the powerful stream of water.

The powerful torrent made it impossible for workers to reach the site of the break and turn off the valve. Workers did cut the supply from the Potomac Filtration Plant, to reduce the amount of water going through the pipes. Two valves up the line were also closed to stop the water entirely.
