After over two decades of anticipation and high expectations, Zack Snyder's adaptation of “The Watchmen” will finally come to a theater near you in just a few short weeks.
Set to be the cult comic book film of the year, the allegedly unfilmable superhero movie premiered last night at the Odeon Leicester Square in London.
Primarily known to people comic book readers, the action in “Watchmen” takes place on an alternate timeline beginning in late 1985 where the United States won the war in Vietnam, Richard Nixon has been elected to third presidential term, and the only man standing between nuclear war between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. is “Dr. Manhattan” (Billy Crudup), a human nuclear bomb who stands on the American side as a nuclear deterrent.
Just like the comic, the movie begins with the murder of Eddie Blake (Jeffery Dean Morgan), a retired superhero formally known as “The Comedian.” His death prompts Rorschach, (Jackie Earl Haley) a joyless, hard-line misanthrope, to launch an investigation which eventually uncovers an insidious conspiracy hatched by an unlikely villain to eliminate all former costumed heroes.
Rorschach warns his former superhero partners, who initially disregard his theory, until Dr. Manhattan is forced off Earth, making the possibility of nuclear war a near certainty.
Based on Alan Moore’s seminal graphic novel, the flick puts on a great visual spectacle packed with strong performances, but devoted fans of the comic book might have a lot to complain about regarding some characters, whether they were taken out completely or had their role in story seriously reduced. Overall, it remains a promising experience more than worth the wait.
