Watch Out For Your Lean Cuisine

Nestlé Prepared Foods Company in Springville, Utah has to recall approximately 879,565 pounds of frozen chicken meals that may contain foreign materials, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said. It is believed that the entrees may contain small pieces of blue plastic.

The frozen dinners were distributed nationwide, and at least one person has reported an injury. The USDA today identified the problem as a "Class I" health hazard in which there is a reasonable probability that "use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."

The three food products recalled on November 18 were Lean Cuisine Pesto Chicken with Bow-Tie Pasta, Lean Cuisine Chicken Mediterranean, and Lean Cuisine Chicken Tuscan, all produced from August 18 to October 27. Consumers can find out whether their meals are affected by looking at the bar code or UPC label on the boxes and calling Lean Cuisine at (800) 993-8625. Then, Press 2, and then Press 1 for a recorded message. No other varieties of Lean Cuisine products are affected by this recall, according to the message.

The news echoes a recall from 2006, only two years ago, where consumers found small bits of plastic in their Lean Cuisine Asian Pot Stickers. Last time, however, the recall was a “Class II.”
