Tuesday, Warren Jeffs, the polygamist sect leader who was
jailed, was transported to a hospital in Las
Vegas. According to CNN, Las Vegas
police Officer Jose Montoya said he was taken from an Arizona
jail to the Sunrise Hospital and Medical
Center in Las Vegas. He refused to give details regarding Warren Jeffs’
medical condition.
“I can't tell you why he was brought here or what his
condition is,” he said, reported CNN.
The polygamist sect leader was convicted last year on two
counts of first-degree felony rape. He also faces other felony charges: five
counts of sexual conduct with a minor and four counts of incest. He was
convicted in November, being sentenced to two consecutive terms of five years
to life in Utah.
In 2001, he performed the marriage of a 14-year-old follower to her 19-year-old
cousin.
According to court records, Warren Jeffs tried to hang
himself while he was waiting his sentence. On the day after he tried to kill
himself, Warren Jeffs was seen by those who were watching him banging his head
and throwing himself against a wall. He also refused food and water for a whole
month and he hurt his knees because he used to kneel in prayer for hours.
Warren Jeffs, 52, is the leader of the Fundamentalist Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It has about 10,000 members.
Although in April, authorities removed about 400 children
from the FLDS' Yearning for Zion Ranch near Eldorado, Texas,
the Texas Supreme Court ruled in June that the state shouldn’t have taken the
children because it had no right. Moreover, the state had no evidence that the
children were in any danger of being abused. The families were allowed to take
their children back.
