Warner Bros, one of the largest producers of film and TV entertainment in the world, announced its intention of re-releasing "The Dark Knight" in January with the declared goal of wining Oscars.
"It's just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people," said a person from the giant producer.
The film producer will re-release the Batman sequel in January because it’s right in the middle of the Academy Awards voting season. Warner Bros. is reportedly in talks with IMAX for the re-release.
The Dark Knight was a huge box office success this summer. The film that features stars like Christian Bale (the Caped Crusader) and the late Heath Ledger (Joker) grossed as much as $512 million in the United States alone and earned $440 million more overseas. The re-release will surely push the film’s earning past the $1 billion milestone worldwide.
The current talks with IMAX were confirmed by Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman. However, it’s not clear yet whether the film will re-appear only on IMAX giant-screen venues or also in conventional venues.
One of the rules of the Academy Awards points out that a film that aims for the Oscar statues must have played for at least 7 days in a row in the LA cinemas before the end of the previous year. The film’s huge success has fueled speculations of possible Oscar nominations for its director, Christopher Nolan, and particularly for Health Ledger’s great performance as the Joker.
The Dark Knight is the second-highest-grossing movie ever behind "Titanic," which earned as much as $1.84 billion in the late 1990s.
