I really think that the guys that said that “Wanted” is a bad movie just didn’t understand what the film is all about. I mean, come on, what would you expect, a psychological film? This is just pure action, nothing besides. And let’s be honest, the movie has plenty of it, plus manages to do something that only a very few films can: keep the same high rhythm all the time.
One thing I didn’t like about “Wanted” is that it kind of lets you see the movies that have inspired it. Everybody is talking about the movie being similar to “Matrix” in many aspects, but let’s not forget the beginning: pure “Fight Club.”
The way Wesley Gibson, portrayed by James McAvoy, describes his life, and most of all the IKEA reference, seems to be just a (worse) rewriting of the same idea from the 1996 movie directed by David Fincher.
Scotsman James McAvoy delivers a superb performance as the normal guy that goes assassin once he is recruited by the Fraternity. I was already accustomed to him playing extremely well from “Atonement” and “The Last King of Scotland,” both of which have been highly appraised by critics, but I was curios how he’ll do when he won’t have to play the shy, sensible man who is always trying to do the right thing, and he didn’t let me down.
The actor manages to turn from the super shy account manager into a highly confident and cool person in a very convincing manner. Ok, I have to admit, I think I saw a little bit of Edward Norton every now and then, but still, kudos to McAvoy.
Angelina Jolie, who was supposed to be the star of the movie, is quite good at being herself. Her character, Fox, a member of the fraternity that is responsible with Gibson’s training, is sexy, has the not-good-enough-for-me attitude, and seems to have been created specially for her.
However, even though it is she who brings people to the cinemas to see the movie, the audience most probably leaves with James McAvoy’s performance in mind.
