Actress Wanda Sykes expressed her outrage with the recent passage of California’s Proposition 8 on Saturday. The legislative measure was the last straw for Sykes. The “Evan Almighty” actress acknowledged that she was herself gay and married to her partner. She made it official and public at the rally held in Las Vegas against Proposition 8.
“I’m proud to be a woman, I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay,” the Emmy award-winning stand-up comedian told the crowd. She added that she did not feel like discussing the issue of her sexual orientation with the media, but the passing of Proposition 8 determined her to come out and “get in [the collective] face” of those who supported the measure.
Sykes, 44, said she tied the knot with her female partner about two weeks before Proposition 8 went into effect. She said that the passage of the measure made her feel like she was “attacked.”
“Now, I gotta get in their face," said the co-star of The New Adventures of Old Christine.
Sykes’ appearance at the Las Vegas gay rally was a bit of a surprise for most people there and for organizers as well. The actress was in town performing at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Her appearance at the gay rally was not announced.
“They pissed off the wrong group of people. They have galvanized a community...Instead of having gay marriage in California, we’re going to get it across the country,” she added.
Sykes married her girlfriend on Oct. 25.
